The Model-View-Controller (MVC) architectural pattern separates an application into three main components: the model, the view, and the controller. The ASP.NET MVC framework provides an alternative to the ASP.NET Web Forms pattern for creating MVC-based Web applications. The ASP.NET MVC framework is a lightweight, highly testable presentation framework that (as with Web Forms-based applications) is integrated with existing ASP.NET features, such as master pages and membership-based authentication. The MVC framework is defined in the System.Web.Mvc namespace and is a fundamental, supported part of the System.Web namespace.

MVC is a standard design pattern that many developers are familiar with. Some types of Web applications will benefit from the MVC framework. Others will continue to use the traditional ASP.NET application pattern that is based on Web Forms and postbacks. Other types of Web applications will combine the two approaches; neither approach excludes the other.

The ASP.NET MVC framework provides the following features:

Separation of application tasks (input logic, business logic, and UI logic), testability, and test-driven development (TDD) by default. All core contracts in the MVC framework are interface-based and can be tested by using mock objects, which are simulated objects that imitate the behavior of actual objects in the application. You can unit-test the application without having to run the controllers in an ASP.NET process, which makes unit testing fast and flexible. You can use any unit-testing framework that is compatible with the .NET Framework.
An extensible and pluggable framework. The components of the ASP.NET MVC framework are designed so that they can be easily replaced or customized. You can plug in your own view engine, URL routing policy, action-method parameter serialization, and other components. The ASP.NET MVC framework also supports the use of Dependency Injection (DI) and Inversion of Control (IOC) container models. DI allows you to inject objects into a class, instead of relying on the class to create the object itself. IOC specifies that if an object requires another object, the first objects should get the second object from an outside source such as a configuration file. This makes testing easier.
A powerful URL-mapping component that lets you build applications that have comprehensible and searchable URLs. URLs do not have to include file-name extensions, and are designed to support URL naming patterns that work well for search engine optimization (SEO) and representational state transfer (REST) addressing.
Support for using the markup in existing ASP.NET page (.aspx files), user control (.ascx files), and master page (.master files) markup files as view templates. You can use existing ASP.NET features with the ASP.NET MVC framework, such as nested master pages, in-line expressions (<%= %>), declarative server controls, templates, data-binding, localization, and so on.
Support for existing ASP.NET features. ASP.NET MVC lets you use features such as forms authentication and Windows authentication, URL authorization, membership and roles, output and data caching, session and profile state management, health monitoring, the configuration system, and the provider architecture.

I was hunting for the VHS version of this when I came across this DVD version. WOW, what can I say? It's really great and inspiring stuff for a novice like me. There's no way I could pull that sort of stuff off, not in a million years, but I guess I will grasp the basic's in time. Zakk guides you through many of his trademark licks and I'm sure the experienced to pro player will have no trouble keeping up with him. I highly recommend it! Now lets hope Young Guitar bring out a Dimebag DVD soon!

It also highlights ways to navigate and organize the XML Designer objects.
Walkthrough: Creating an XML Document based on a Schema
This video is a continuation from 2501 and shows how to create an XML document that is based on the XSD that was created in the previous lesson. It first shows how to create an XML document, and link it to the Schema. It then shows how to enter and navigate the XML Data Editor to add data into the XML document in a simple GUI.
Walkthrough: Generating a DataSet from a Schema
Datasets provide a new way of persisting and managing data in ADO.NET, and XSDs are central to their existence. This video shows how to create a DataSet given an XSD, and shows what was created in code for the DataSet. It also demonstrates how to preview a DataSet to see its attributes and settings.
XML Designer User Interface

Understanding (Named) Complex Types
Named Complex Types are like SimpleTypes, except that they can contain many Elements and Sub Elements. The enforce consistency throughout your XSD Schema and potentially reduce its size. This video demonstrates how to create Named Complex Types in the XML Designer.
Understanding Groups
Groups define valid values for an XML Element to limit the potential correct values. This is used typically to enforce business rules within an application. This video demonstrates how to create the three different forms of Groups in the XML Designer.
Understanding Keys
Keys allow you to create relations, the topic of the next video in this series. This video explains what keys are in more depth, how to create them using the Edit Key dialog, and what is generated by the XML Schema Designer.
Understanding Relations
Relations take two complex type elements (which Microsoft's documentation refer to as tables ... just like you would find tables in a database or ADO.NET DataSet) and create relations between them. Thse relations serve two purposes. First, when the XML Schema is used to generate a Dataset, the relation allows you to look up all the records from a child table that relate to a record in the parent table. Additionally, relations allow you to enforce referential integrity in your Dataset. This video explains the creation of relations, including the Edit Relations dialog, as well as how to edit and delete relations and keys.

Written for the developer with previous programming and design experience, Applying UML and Patterns combines UML, software patterns, and Java to illustrate the author's own design strategy. Though author Craig Larman sometimes relies heavily on the jargon of software engineering, there's no doubt that his book contains some immediately useful ideas on software design, using the latest and greatest in software-engineering research.

This book begins by outlining a basic process of software design using iterative, object-oriented techniques. The case study used for this text is a point-of-sale (POS) system, a helpful real-world example. The book constructs use case diagrams and basic conceptual and class models for this system. The author then adds sequence diagrams to show how the POS system will do its processing and collaboration diagrams to show how objects will interact with one another. The author uses standard UML diagrams to document the design.

When it comes to refining class design, the author's experience with patterns really shines. His General Responsibility Assignment Software Patterns (GRASP) suggest guidelines for designing classes that work together effectively. Larman believes that the ability to assign responsibilities to classes effectively is one of the most important aspects of good object-oriented design. His patterns allow this to happen and provide an interesting contribution to the design process. (The author also introduces more widely used software patterns to enhance the design process.)

When it comes to coding the design, Java is the programming language of choice for this text. Further chapters discuss how to refine an initial design using an iterative process of software engineering. While it's unlikely that readers will adopt Larman's approach to software design in its entirety, his guidelines--and application of patterns to class design, all documented using UML--make this a worthwhile text for the more experienced reader. --Richard Dragan
