Advanced Modeling with UML

http://aycu32.webshots.com/image/21591/2002116227847155316_rs.jpg

Since the turn of the millennium, we have been experimenting with the Unified Modeling Language to see how effective it really is in documenting software architecture and design. With the release of UML 2.0 in 2007 (and as a results of all the practice that I have had over the past seven years), we are fully convinced about the expressive power of UML. It is now eminently possible to capture the ideas and essence of software architecture in crisp and clear UML diagrams.

Applying UML and Patterns (Hardcover)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516RTAHNNFL._SL500_AA240_.jpg
Amazon.com Review
Written for the developer with previous programming and design experience, Applying UML and Patterns combines UML, software patterns, and Java to illustrate the author's own design strategy. Though author Craig Larman sometimes relies heavily on the jargon of software engineering, there's no doubt that his book contains some immediately useful ideas on software design, using the latest and greatest in software-engineering research.

This book begins by outlining a basic process of software design using iterative, object-oriented techniques. The case study used for this text is a point-of-sale (POS) system, a helpful real-world example. The book constructs use case diagrams and basic conceptual and class models for this system. The author then adds sequence diagrams to show how the POS system will do its processing and collaboration diagrams to show how objects will interact with one another. The author uses standard UML diagrams to document the design.

When it comes to refining class design, the author's experience with patterns really shines. His General Responsibility Assignment Software Patterns (GRASP) suggest guidelines for designing classes that work together effectively. Larman believes that the ability to assign responsibilities to classes effectively is one of the most important aspects of good object-oriented design. His patterns allow this to happen and provide an interesting contribution to the design process. (The author also introduces more widely used software patterns to enhance the design process.)

When it comes to coding the design, Java is the programming language of choice for this text. Further chapters discuss how to refine an initial design using an iterative process of software engineering. While it's unlikely that readers will adopt Larman's approach to software design in its entirety, his guidelines--and application of patterns to class design, all documented using UML--make this a worthwhile text for the more experienced reader. --Richard Dragan

?atrick is a pragmatist with a purist? knowledge. He has a deep understanding of what ?mells?right, and he knows when and how to find the right balance to get the job done. This philosophy of balanced ?ure pragmatism?pervades this book and makes it useful.?lt;br />
?rom the foreword by Scott Hanselman, Author of ComputerZen Blog, www.computerzen.com; Senior Program Manager, Developer Division, Microsoft Corporation
Writing code is rewarding, but writing high-quality code, on time and at the lowest possible cost, is what makes a software project successful. As the role of a professional developer has evolved and taken on additional responsibilities, it is now necessary to work in concert with a team in order to improve both the process and final results of a software project. This unique book introduces a set of concrete best practices and construction techniques that can be applied to the development process and to actual code construction, so that you can confidently solve business problems rather than deal solely with pure coding tasks.
Patrick Cauldwell understands that it is no longer sufficient to just write software that solves a problem; it must also be fast, scalable, reliable, and easy to use. In this reference, he explains how to build software that is of high quality at a lower cost and shares with you the practical steps you must take in order to transition from software engineer to technical lead.

Swing Extreme Testing

Swing Extreme Testing

Thorough testing is the basis of good software. Whether we use an agile development methodology such as Extreme Programming, or a more traditional approach, we must test our software at the unit level and application level. The tests must run automatically and cover all aspects of the software.

In this book, the authors draw on more than 20 years of experience to show how automated testing can be applied to a real commercial product.

This book will teach you how to automatically test user interfaces (Swing GUIs), the help system, internationalization, log files, spreadsheets, email, and web services, how to perform tests involving multiple JVMs, and a host of other things. These tests are applied at the module level (unit tests) and at the application level (function tests).

VTC Design Patterns Training

http://www.vtccanada.com/can/images/single-cd.jpg

Design patterns let programmers avoid re-inventing the wheel. The original book (Design Patterns by the "Gang of Four": Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides) was phenomenally successful. When the programmer faces a particular problem, all they have to do is to look up the correct matching design pattern and use it to implement the solution. In this tutorial VTC author Steve Holzner guides you through the most popular and useful design patterns, so you can begin incorporating them into your own code.

The Art of Unit Testing: with Examples in .NET

TITLE : The Art of Unit Testing: with Examples in .NET
TYPE : Computer/Programming
AUTHOR : Roy Osherove
PUBLISHER : Manning Publications
ISBN : 1933988274
PAGES : 225 pages
EDITION : 1st
LANGUAGE : ENGLISH
RELEASE DATE: Unknown

RELEASE NOTES :

The Art of Unit Testing guides the reader on the journey from beginner to master in the subtle art of unit testing. Based on expert author Roy Osherove's real-world development experiences, this book shows developers how to make sure the code that they write actually works as expected, and how to make these verifications as automated as possible. Not only that, the book shows techniques that help to make sure that tests are maintainable, readable, and test the right thing over time.

The author establishes five rules for good unit tests built upon the three major principles that any good test be maintainable, trustworthy, and readable. Clear sections present established best practices, and the book also provides clear guidance on what to test and where to start testing in a legacy code project.

Unlike other books on this topic, this book trades theory for real-world examples. It's designed so that a working developer can start writing better unit tests now. Unlike most Unit Testing and TDD books, most examples are in C# on the .NET platform.

Learning UML 2.0

Author(s): Kim Hamilton, Russell Miles
Publisher: O'Reilly

Language: English
File type: CHM

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the standard modeling language for software and systems development. This statement alone is a pretty conclusive argument for making UML part of your software repertoire, however it leaves some questions unanswered. Why is UML unified? What can be modeled? How is UML a language? And, probably most importantly, why should you care?
Systems design on any reasonably large scale is difficult. Anything from a simple desktop application to a full multi-tier enterprise scale system can be made up of hundredsand potentially thousandsof software and hardware components. How do you (and your team) keep track of which components are needed, what their jobs are, and how they meet your customers' requirements? Furthermore, how do you share your design with your colleagues to ensure the pieces work together? There are just too many details that can be misinterpreted or forgotten when developing a complex system without some help. This is where modelingand of course UMLcomes in.
In systems design, you model for one important reason: to manage complexity. Modeling helps you see the forest for the trees, allowing you to focus on, capture, document, and communicate the important aspects of your system's design.
A model is an abstraction of the real thing. When you model a system, you abstract away any details that are irrelevant or potentially confusing. Your model is a simplification of the real system, so it allows the design and viability of a system to be understood, evaluated, and criticized quicker than if you had to dig through the actual system itself. Even better, with a formal modeling language, the language is abstract yet just as precise as a programming language. This precision allows a language to be machine-readable, so it can be interpreted, executed, and transformed between systems.
To effectively model a system, you need one very important thing: a language with which the model can be described. And here's where UML comes in.

Alfresco Developer Guide

Alfresco is an open source platform for Enterprise Content Management solutions. ECM includes things like Document Management, Web Content Management, Collaboration/Enterprise 2.0, Digital Asset Management, Records Management, and Imaging. At its core is a repository for rich content like documents, web assets, XML, and multimedia. The repository is surrounded by a services layer (supporting both SOAP and REST) that makes getting content into and out of the repository a breeze, which is why so many next generation Internet solutions are built on Alfresco.

Implementing Alfresco usually involves extending the repository to accommodate your business-specific metadata and business logic. These extensions are done using some combination of Java, JavaScript, XML, and FreeMarker.

This book takes you through a set of exercises as if you were rolling out and customizing the platform for a fictional organization called SomeCo, which wants to roll out Alfresco enterprise-wide. Each department has a set of requirements that need addressed. We will show you how to extend Alfresco to meet these requirements. By the time you've worked through the entire book, you will be familiar with the entire platform. You'll be prepared to make your own customizations whether they are part of a Document Management solution, a web site that uses Alfresco for content storage, or an entire custom application built on Alfresco's REST API. This book will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to make Alfresco do what you need it to do.

Appoach

This book focuses on teaching by example. Every chapter provides a bit of an overview, and then dives right in to hands-on examples so you can see and play with the solution in your own environment. All code samples run on both the latest Enterprise and Labs release.

Audience

This book will be most useful to developers who are writing code to customize Alfresco for their organization or who are creating custom applications that sit on top of Alfresco.

This book is for Java developers, and you will get most from the book if you already work with Java but you need not have prior experience on Alfresco. Although Alfresco makes heavy use of open source frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, JavaServer Faces, and Lucene, no prior experience using these is assumed.

Head First Object-Oriented Analysis & Design

If you havent seen a Head First book before, youre in for a treat: The series tosses out the concept of the dry, technical educational book that we all suffered through in programming class and occasionally still suffer through and replaces it with something thats a lot of fun. For example, nearly every programmer I know has a copy of the Gang of Four Design Patterns book. And although there was a concerted effort in the late 1990s to embrace and extend the original Gang of Four book with a library of new titles, the resulting books often felt like photocopies whose extensions were highly debatable. (I remember one in particular in which the author simply borrowed common graphical user interface [GUI] designs, graphed out the appropriate diagrams, and credited himself for the pattern by using a name and year syntax such as [ECKSTEIN99].) In short, it takes a unique kind of book to truly build off a classic, and so far, Head First Design Patterns is the best approach Ive seen.

ISBN: 1565921127|Author: Andy Oram Mike Loukides |Publisher: O'Reilly Media|Publication Date: 1996-12-01|Pages: 260|djvu|3.7mb

One of the great benefits of Unix is the vast array of free and inexpensive software tools that are available for the platform. Programming with GNU Software provides an overview of how C and C++ programmers can use some of these tools: the source-code editor Emacs, the gcc compiler, gdb debugger, gprof profiler, and the RCS version-control system. The book offers a quick-paced tutorial that, unlike some introductions to Unix tools, is particularly focused on the needs of C programmers

Code Quality: The Open Source Perspective (Effective Software Development Series)

Diomidis Spinellis, "Code Quality: The Open Source Perspective (Effective Software Development Series)"
Addison-Wesley Professional | 2006-04-13 | ISBN: 0321166078 | 608 pages | PDF | 3,7 MB

Diomidis Spinellis' first book, Code Reading, showed programmers how to understand and modify key functional properties of software. Code Quality focuses on non-functional properties, demonstrating how to meet such critical requirements as reliability, security, portability, and maintainability, as well as efficiency in time and space.

Spinellis draws on hundreds of examples from open source projects--such as the Apache web and application servers, the BSD Unix systems, and the HSQLDB Java database--to illustrate concepts and techniques that every professional software developer will be able to appreciate and apply immediately.

Web Application Design Patterns

Pawan Vora, "Web Application Design Patterns"
Morgan Kaufmann | 2009-03-13 | ISBN: 012374265X | 448 pages | PDF | 28,5 MB

Ever notice that-in spite of their pervasiveness-designing web applications is still challenging? While their benefits motivate their creation, there are no well-established guidelines for design. This often results in inconsistent behaviors and appearances, even among web applications created by the same company.
Design patterns for web applications, similar in concept to those for web sites and software design, offer an effective solution. In Web Application Design Patterns, Pawan Vora documents design patterns for web applications by not only identifying design solutions for user interaction problems, but also by examining the rationale for their effectiveness, and by presenting how they should be applied.
. Design interfaces faster, with a better rationale for the solutions you choose.
. Learn from over more than100 patterns, with extensive annotation on use and extension.
. Take a short-cut into understanding the industry with more than 500 full-color screenshots and a web site for help, discussion, and a collection of additional patterns.
